RINGS
In the past, only noble men were allowed to wear rings as a demonstration of their social class and power in the society. Later on, married or engaged women were also permitted to wear rings, as a symbol of fidelity or marriage vows. Nowadays, rings are an important part of the Sardinian culture and one of the most admired items in the traditional and contemporary outfits.
EARRINGS
In the Sardinian tradition the earrings as a decorative item were introduced much later as only men were initially allowed to wear jewellery. The design of earrings has changed dramatically over generations, however they keep their humble origins, as earrings were the most commonly used article among all classes. Earrings are an essential component of the traditional and modern Sardinian outfit.
PENDANTS
Given the elaborate designs and value of the necklaces, only the highest society would have traditionally been able to afford them. For this reason, many women would have worn a pendant instead. In Sardinian traditions, pendants are still associated to the function of amulets, offering protection from negative forces or simply as a way to attract good luck. BRACELETS
This article even though present in the modern Sardinian jewellery has a different history compared to the other articles. Despite its ancient origins, historically there was a long period that saw bracelets disappear from Sardinian costume entirely. This is mainly due to the fact that the Sardinian dress was relatively conservative in exposing parts of a woman’s body.
NECKLACES
The use of gold or silver and the intricacy of its decoration make the necklace by far the most important ornament of Sardinian costume. Customary Sardinian culture used necklaces to identify women from different classes of the society. Nowadays, their primary purpose is in enriching the feminine figure and enhancing a woman’s beauty.
cufflinks and buttons
The buttons in Sardinia are a fundamental element of the traditional clothing, used to errich collars and cuffs. The buttons are available in different shapes and forms however the most traditional is the Bottone Sardo which has a shape often inspired by shapes that evoke fertility and motherhood, they were traditionally given to brides as a wish for a serene and fruitful married life.
